MTB Index measures Olympic cross-country races on a single scale, borrowed from the FIS points of alpine skiing and adapted to mountain biking. Three steps, and every number on these pages comes from them.
Every athlete who finishes with a time is worth their percentage gap to the winner, times 4: the winner scores zero, 3 % behind scores 12, 25 % behind scores 100. The 400 is the unit of the scale, not a parameter: it says what a 100 % gap is worth and nothing more. At World Cups a race factor, estimated on positions six to thirty, corrects the days when gaps open up because of rain, the course or the pace.
The level of the race is added to the score. World Cups, World Championships and the Olympics are worth zero: they are the reference. Every other race takes its level from the index of the athletes at the start: what each of them is usually worth, compared with what they did that day, says how hard the race was. If fewer than three athletes with a valid index lined up, the level is penalised; with too few, none is assigned. Races reserved to under-23s sit below the under-23 World Cup by rule, because no reserved race can be worth more than the World Cup of its category.
An athlete's index is the mean of their three best scores of the season, which is the calendar year. With two results the mean is raised by 25 %, with one by 50 %: it is the FIS rule for athletes who raced little, and it is meant to be cautious. Athletes with fewer than three results but a previous season read the index of that season, recomputed on today's scores, until this year's results reach three. Lapped riders get no score: that day stays on the page with its laps, but it enters neither the index nor the level of any race.
The index does not measure how strong an athlete is today: it measures their three best days of the year. Recent form has its own tab in the list, a weighted mean of the last 30, 60, 90 or 120 days. Two decimals, as the FIS does: a third digit would be a precision the model does not have.
Results come from the public results pages of uci.org and ChronoRace. MTB Index is not affiliated with either, and neither has endorsed it: the official results are theirs, the computation is ours and independent. No UCI point enters the index, and the index has no value for any federation. The list is recomputed every week on the whole archive, so the numbers of past races can also move slightly when new results come in.
